Digital twin of a person and industrial digital twin: how they differ

Also in: Spanish

A digital twin of a person is an AI replica of a real professional, with their judgement, their face and their voice, that talks on their behalf and says it is an AI. An industrial digital twin is the virtual copy of a machine, a factory or a physical system, built to simulate and test changes.

This article is part of Digital Twin by Legathum.

In short

  • Both are copies that work with data from the original; what changes is what gets copied.
  • The industrial twin copies a thing and is used to simulate, predict and test changes.
  • The twin of a person copies judgement, a face and a voice, and talks to clients.
  • Only the twin of a person needs consent, an AI notice and a way to revoke it.
  • Both are checked by comparing them with the original.

Digital twin of a person and industrial digital twin: the difference

The two share a name because both are copies that work with data from the original. The difference is what they copy. The industrial twin copies a thing: a machine, a production line or a building. The digital twin of a person copies someone: what they know, how they decide, their face and their voice.

Everything else follows from that. A machine does not have to give permission to be copied, and a person does. A factory does not talk to your clients, and a professional digital twin exists to do exactly that.

If you searched for «digital twin» and found only engineering software, this article separates the two meanings.

What an industrial digital twin is

An industrial digital twin is a virtual model of an object or a physical system, fed with data from the original. It is used to see how the original behaves, simulate what a change would do and test it without touching the real thing.

The term began in industry, with machines and factories, and has spread to much larger systems. The European Commission, for example, is developing a digital twin of the planet through its Destination Earth initiative: a model of the Earth to monitor, simulate and predict how natural phenomena and human activity interact. The Commission describes those twins as digital replicas of the Earth's systems, built on real-time observations and predictive modelling.

In every case, the industrial twin answers questions about things: when a part will fail, what happens if the load goes up or how a forecast changes.

What a digital twin of a person is

A digital twin of a person is an AI replica of a real professional that talks on their behalf with the judgement that person has approved. In Digital Twin by Legathum it has these pieces, all working today:

  • Its own Master Brain: the knowledge base holding the materials the professional provides.
  • A Book of Criteria: rules in plain language, reviewed and approved, each with its source.
  • Face and voice from a single recording of about seven minutes.
  • Consent by email, with a video of the person reading a sentence, and a manual review by the team.
  • A name that ends in «Clon IA», and the twin saying it is an AI the first time it speaks.
  • Revocation with one click: it stops talking at once.

The twin joins meetings on Google Meet, Teams and Zoom, and works in more than 20 languages. It answers questions about a method, a service or a case, using the rules of the person it replicates.

The differences, point by point

This table sums up what separates the two kinds of twin:

Industrial digital twin compared with a digital twin of a person
Industrial digital twinDigital twin of a person
What it copiesA machine, a factory or a physical systemA professional's knowledge, judgement, face and voice
What it is fed withSensors, measurements and simulation modelsThe professional's materials and rules they approve
What it is forSimulating, predicting and testing changesTalking to clients and applying a method
Who gives permissionThe owner of the equipment or the siteThe person replicated, with a consent video
Who it talks toEngineers and operations managersClients, and it says it is an AI
How it is switched offThe model is disconnectedThe person revokes it with one click
How it is checkedIt is compared with how the original behavesIt solves cases blind and is compared with what the person decided

The last row is where the two worlds look most alike. A twin, industrial or of a person, is only useful if it behaves like the original, and that has to be measured.

What they have in common

Beyond the name, the two kinds of twin share four traits:

  • They depend on their data. An industrial twin with badly calibrated sensors predicts badly, and a twin of a person with unwritten rules answers with whatever seems plausible.
  • They age. The machine gets new parts and the professional changes their mind, so the twin is updated or stops resembling the original.
  • They need someone responsible. Someone decides what the twin may do and reviews what it does.
  • They are tested before anything is entrusted to them. At Legathum, the twin of a person passes the Mirror Test before it works: real cases the person has already solved are given to it without the answer and compared blind. It only works if it agrees in at least 90% of the cases and crosses no red line.

What only the twin of a person requires

Copying someone brings obligations a machine does not create:

  • Consent. In Spain, using a person's voice or image for commercial purposes requires their express consent (Organic Law 1/1982, Articles 2.2 and 7.6).
  • Revocation. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and withdrawing it must be as easy as giving it (GDPR, Article 7(3)).
  • Transparency. Anyone talking to the twin must be told they are dealing with an AI, from 2 August 2026 (EU AI Act, Article 50).
  • Decisions that stay with the person. The twin applies approved rules, and whatever those rules do not cover it passes to the person it replicates.

That is why a Legathum digital twin is only ever made of a real person, with consent on video, manual review, an introduction as an AI and revocation with one click. These references are Spanish and EU law; other jurisdictions have their own rules.

Which one a services company needs

A services company rarely has machines to simulate. What is scarce in a consultancy, a firm or a training business is the hours of the people whose judgement is the product. There, the twin that makes sense is the twin of a person.

For a consultant, it is the basis of the virtual consultant in Legathum Legacy. For the leader of a company there is a separate programme, CEO Legacy, which is discussed in a private conversation.

In development: each client's twin selling, scheduling, charging for and delivering their service from start to finish without the person stepping in. The 15-minute meetings with Legathum are taken by Deibson Silva in person.

If you are choosing between a twin and a video avatar, the comparison is in AI avatar vs digital twin. If what you want is to bring AI into your company's processes, the place to start is company hybridisation with AI.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digital twin of a person?

An AI replica of a real professional, with their knowledge, their rules, their face and their voice, that talks on their behalf and says it is an AI.

What is an industrial digital twin?

The virtual copy of a machine, a factory or a physical system, fed with data from the original and used to simulate and test changes.

Why do they share a name?

Because both are copies that work with data from the original and are checked by comparing them with it. What changes is what is copied: a thing or a person.

Does a digital twin of a person need their permission?

Yes. At Legathum, the person gives consent by email with a video, the team reviews it by hand and the person can revoke it with one click.

How do you know the twin decides like the person?

With the Mirror Test: the twin solves, blind, real cases the person has already solved, and it only works if it agrees in at least 90% of them and crosses no red line.

Where are the digital twin plans?

The plans and their annual prices are on the plans page of Digital Twin by Legathum, with VAT added separately.
